Can Symobo build the school of tomorrow?

That question came from Willem Schoors, director of Stroom in Leuven, an innovative first-grade school where students have plenty of opportunity to develop their creativity, curiosity, and idiosyncrasy. Willem wanted to create a place in the thriving neighborhood of the Vaartkom that moves with the city and the world around him, where students get energy and incentives to find and find their own way.

Symobo turned out to be the ideal partner in building a new school building, because we set the same values that Stroom wants to get the best out of its students. Craftsmanship. Quality. Precision. Punctuality. After all, power is also a story of sustainability: building a place that stands the test of time with as little ecological impact as possible.

Symobo formed a team with architect Tom Cortoos, who developed the design for the school. There were quite a few challenges for Symobo: the project is located right next to the Dyle, which meant special stability requirements. Together with stability engineer Willem, solutions were developed for this. For example, it needed a special foundation, with masses of poles in the ground and a lot of concrete. What is also striking is that there are no braces, which has implications for the support structure. We provided a steel frame, where concrete panels are then attached, then we lay vaults and that forms the supporting structure.
