Energy efficient modular classrooms: just €277 energy costs per year

Learn how EPB-compliant modular classrooms with heat pump, PV and LED lighting only use €277 per year. Includes technical insights.

Energy-efficient construction, also modular

Today, schools that invest in temporary or modular classrooms expect more than just extra space. Energy performance, comfort and sustainability have become just as important.
Commissioned by Symobo, the IKP engineering office in Heusden-Zolder carried out a detailed calculation of the energy consumption of modular classrooms.

Modular classrooms that must comply with the applicable EPB standards in 2025: a clear combination of a highly insulated building with clearly prescribed requirements for heating, ventilation and “renewable energy”.

The independent engineering office showed that an EPB-compliant modular classroom of 54 m², equipped with a heat pump and PV system, has an average of €277 per year in energy costs. This assumed an energy cost of €0.3 per kWh.

Partly thanks to the PV panels' own revenue, electricity consumption is almost integrally compensated during the spring and summer months: a first step towards energy neutrality.

Technical principles

The calculation is based on realistic usage data from GO's quality manual! Education.

Key parameters:

  • Heating system: air/air heat pump
  • Ventilation system: C+
  • Full-hour heating: 1,200 hours/year
  • PV installation: 550 Wp
  • Energy rate: €0.30/kWh

This configuration combines renewable energy with a highly efficient heating and cooling solution. During the warmer months, the heat pump also provides free cooling thanks to the solar power generated.

Thermal performance of the building envelope

The energy efficiency of the room starts with the construction itself. The modular units consist of highly insulated walls, floors and roofs with excellent U values:

Structural components (U value in W/m²K)

  • Floor (≤ 0.20)
  • Outer wall (≤ 0.23)
  • Roof (≤ 0.20)
  • Glazing (1.0)
  • PVC window profiles (1,3)

These values ensure low heat losses and a stable indoor climate throughout the year.
In combination with energy-efficient LED lighting and sophisticated ventilation, energy consumption is kept to a minimum.

Comfort, durability and compliance

An EPB-compliant classroom offers more than just a lower energy bill.
It also provides:

  • Higher level of comfort for students and teachers
  • Lower CO₂ emissions through renewable energy
  • Long lifespan thanks to high-quality materials
  • Full EPB compliance, ready for future regulations

Conclusion

An energy performance of just €277 per year proves that modular classrooms can perfectly meet modern sustainability goals.
By combining heat pump technology, PV panels and high-quality insulation, EPB-compliant classrooms offer a forward-looking solution for schools that want to invest in energy efficiency, comfort and low operating costs.
